Cultural Connections

The Cowichan Region is home to seven First Nations and over 80,000 people. For Indigenous people, racism is often a powerful barrier to employment, education, healthcare, and other essential aspects of life. It was determined that that the Cowichan community lacked insight about how to include Indigenous people in the creation of social Elderpolicies and services.

In 2016, we received an application from Social Planning Cowichan to understand systemic barriers and infuse the perspectives of Indigenous people into mainstream policy making. Our Social Services Advisors agreed this was a good idea.

Donors like you made possible a $150K grant that helped the Cowichan community assess where it’s at, enable people to experience reconciliation workshops, understand systemic barriers and to explore what is needed for a long-term commitment to the journey of reconciliation.

Over the past five years, the Social Services focus area has provided support to a a range of leading charities including: Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House, Vancouver Native Health Society, St. Paul's Foundation, Canadian Mental Health Association, Christ Church Cathedral, Reconciliation Canada, Port Alberni Shelter Society, University of BC, and Pacific AIDS Network, among others.
