FUNDED PROJECT
Learn about the great work that the Animal Welfare fund supports, like this project: Humane Wildlife Control Accreditation
British Columbia is known for its diverse fauna and flora, however, human activity can endanger wild animals and their habitat. To resolve human-animal conflicts, wildlife control is undertaken that often involves considerable animal suffering and harmful environmental impacts.
In 2015 we received an application from the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems to bring together industry, animal welfare societies, academics, and social enterprises to create evidence-based standards that will improve animal lives and reduce the environmental effects of animal control. Our Animal Welfare Advisors agreed that this was a good idea.
Donors like you made possible a $180K grant to develop an accreditation program that aims to shift the behaviours of animal control companies. Ultimately, the accreditation program hopes to reduce the number of injured and orphaned animals caused by inappropriate wildlife control as well as the harmful impact on the environment.
Over the past five years, the Animal Welfare focus area has provided support to a a range of leading charities including: Grizzly Bear Foundation, Vancouver Humane Society, Paws for Hope Animal Foundation, University of BC, Victoria Humane Society, Wild Ocean Whale Society, Canadian Animal Assistance Team, and Raincoast Conservation Foundation, among others.
